Thompson had talked about killing himself, his widow said

The widow of US writer Hunter S Thompson has said her husband killed himself while they were speaking to one another on the telephone.

Thompson - best-known for his 1972 account of a drug-addled Nevada trip, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - shot himself on Sunday at his Colorado home.

His widow, Anita Thompson, 32, told the Aspen Daily News she heard the "clicking of the gun".

She said: "I was on the phone with him, he set the receiver down and did it."

Mrs Thompson said her husband had asked her to come home from a health club so they could work on his weekly column, but instead of saying goodbye, he shot himself.

She added that she heard a loud, muffled noise, but did not know what had happened.

"I was waiting for him to get back on the phone," she said.

Thompson, who was a leading political journalist and one of the most important US authors of the 20th century, was found dead by his son, Juan.

The 67-year-old shot himself in the head in the kitchen while his son, daughter-in-law and six-year-old grandson were in the house.

Mrs Thompson told the newspaper her husband had repeatedly talked about killing himself in the months running up to his death.

He had also left verbal and written instructions about what he wanted done with his body, his unpublished works and his assets.

"He wanted to leave on top of his game. I wish I could have been more supportive of his decision," she added.

15:24pm 25th February 2005 The family of a woman who died after being moved out of a trauma room to accommodate the ailing Michael Jackson plans to sue both the hospital and the star.

Manuela Gomez Ruiz, 74, was transferred out of the main trauma room at the Marian Medical Centre in Santa Maria, California, when Jackson was rushed in suffering from "flu-like symptoms" last week.

Her family claims she was taken off a machine ventilator and her breathing was instead assisted manually by a handpump.

Mrs Ruiz was being treated after having a heart attack but suffered two more that day before she died.

Her daughter-in-law, Anna Ruiz, told ABC News she saw Jackson come into the emergency unit.

"He walked in," she said. "When I saw him, he was walking unassisted."

Mrs Ruiz's daughter Maria Elena Ortiz was also in the hospital and objected when her mother was moved.

"Why does she have to be moved if he's coming in for a stomach flu?" she said.

"I said: 'My mother just had a heart attack and I think it's more critical than a stomach flu'. They didn't say anything."

The family claims the chaos caused by Jackson's arrival distracted staff. They said equipment had to be crammed into the smaller room and they were limited to two visitors at a time.

STRIPPING THE POSTER GIRL

Vandals have been tearing pasted on underwear off a controversial lap dancing poster, it emerged today.

A red bra and matching pants were added to ten city hoardings four days ago after complaints from the Advertising Standards Authority about the naked model on all fours.

The Medusa lap dancing club, in Suffolk Street, bowed to public pressure after the Evening Mail exclusively revealed that families had branded the poster obscene.

An underwear set was hastily designed to cover the model's naked rump and the bra and pants were pasted on to the billboards

But the advert in Bristol Road South, Northfield, where the first complaints were made, is now "naked" again.

Vicky Ford, Conservative prospective Parliamentary candidate for Northfield, said: "When I drove past it the model was still naked. It seems to me there's been no cover-up at all and we've been let down on the promises made by the club to make the advert more responsible."

But Medusa Club spokesman Jules Green said: "We know that all our posters had the new underwear pasted on. We understand that the new overlay took about two to three hours to dry when it was pasted on.

"Someone has obviously gone to that advert and peeled off the underwear."

The Advertising Standards Authority last week received 16 complaints about the advert showing a naked woman on all fours, wearing only a Santa hat, boots and gloves.

Angry families in Northfield said it debased women.

One mother said: "There are probably some little ones who might think this is Santa's wife."

'WE'VE FOUND YOUR PENIS IN THE SEWER...WANT IT BACK?"

A woman in Anchorage, Alaska, is charged with cutting off her boyfriend's penis and flushing it down toilet.

The man is hospitalized Monday, recovering from surgery to have his penis reattached.

The suspect, 33-year-old Kim Tran, is charged with assault, domestic violence and tampering with evidence.

Police said the incident happened Saturday night when the 44-year-old man and Tran argued at their Anchorage home.

A short time later, the two were involved in sexual relations when the man agreed to be tied up to the windowsill.

It was at that point, police said, Tran used a kitchen knife to amputate her partner's member and flush it down the toilet.

Tran then untied the man and rushed him to the hospital as crews searched for and recovered the organ from the sewer, police said.

Surgeons were able to reattach the member, but said it will take time to determine whether the operation will be successful.

Police said they were surprised by the nature of the crime.

"This is something that I have never seen before in my 15-years at the police department," said Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Anita Shell. "It's a very unusual type of assault."
