MEXICAN CITY BANS INDOOR NUDITY...THAT'S RIGHT, INDOOR NUDITY

(AP) Alarmed by glimpses of sweaty citizens in the buff, the city council in the southeastern city of Villahermosa has adopted a law banning indoor nudity, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The regulation, which takes effect on Jan. 1, calls for as much as 36 hours in jail or a fine of $121 for offenders in the Tabasco state capital, 410 miles east of Mexico City.

"We are talking about zero tolerance ... for a lack of morality,'' said city councilwoman Blanca Estela Pulido of the Revolutionary Institutional Party, which governs the state and city.

Opposition party councilman Rodrigo Sanchez said in an interview that the measure, part of a larger series of prohibitions, "tramples on the rights of the citizens by taking laughable measures such as contemplating penalties for citizens who walk around nude inside their houses."

"I have no idea how you detect the naked. You'd have to have a big operation to try to bring it under control," he added.

Pulido said she was confident that citizens who catch a glimpse of offenders would report them to police -- though the law also threatens jail for peeping Toms.

The city on the southern Gulf of Mexico is noted for its swelteringly hot, humid climate.

"The majority of houses have a lot of ventilation and we give ourselves the luxury of going naked," Pulido said. "Because we walk past the windows, you see a lot of things."

HIDING THE SALAMI

A SWISS student is counting the cost of hiding a sausage, after being charged under Australia's strict quarantine laws and fined $4,000 in a Perth court.

Dylan Pascal Graves, a Swiss national studying English in Western Australia, was nabbed carrying a salami at Perth International Airport in November after a routine search by Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) officers.

After declaring twice he was not carrying any food, officers found the 400 grams of salami in his luggage via an x-ray scan.

When asked why he had not declared the salami, he replied he had intended to eat it.

Perth magistrate Graeme Calder yesterday fined Graves $4000 on the charges of knowingly making a misleading statement to an officer, and knowingly importing a prohibited food into the country.


According to AQIS's Perth Airport acting manager Ian Ladner, such importation of uncooked meats posed a serious risk of foot-and-mouth disease.

"The foot and mouth outbreak in the United Kingdom in February 2001 brought home to Australians just how easily livelihoods can be devastated by exotic diseases," Mr Ladner said.

"With so many people travelling at this time of year, the penalty serves as a reminder to passengers that they must declare all items of quarantine concern – including food and souvenirs made with animal or plant material."

AQIS screens all incoming flights for pest and disease risks, using a combination of detector dogs, X-ray examination and physical inspection of passengers' bags.

BRAZILIAN THIEVES STEAL WANG MEDICATIONS


The odd thing is, in Brazil these drugs are sold over the counter...

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Six pistol-toting Brazilian men appeared to have more than cash on their minds when they robbed a drug store in Rio de Janeiro.

"They specifically demanded that we give them anti-impotence drugs. These drugs and the money was what interested them," Ailton de Souza, the drugstore manager, told Reuters on Tuesday.

On Sunday night, the robbers opened the vault with a blow torch and fled with an equivalent of about $7,000 (3,600 pounds) in cash and cheques, as well as more than 100 boxes containing 400 pills worth about $2,600 -- enough for a two-month sex marathon for each of the six robbers.

"They were pretty indiscriminate about the brands," the manager said, explaining that the men took packages of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

The drugs, used to treat erectile dysfunction, are sold prescription-free in most Brazilian pharmacies.

Other than a groovy 1970s soundtrack, I was never overly impressed by Paul Thomas Anderson's film about the demise of porn's "Golden Era." No matter how compelling the story, no matter how great the dialogue, no matter how accurately the trappings of the age were portrayed, the fact that every one of the characters was a complete dumbass kind of ruined things for me. Until I watched it dubbed into Spanish on HBO Latino early this morning. Damn. Burt Reynolds speaking with a disembodied accent straight out of Mexico D.F.? He hasn't been this entertaining since Cannonball Run II. Seriously. The Spanish version of Boogie Nights rocks, kids. Trust me, you need to see it now. You can't speak Spanish? I don't think it will detract from your enjoyment. Of course, I could be completely wrong. All I know is that I like this version much, much better.
